Colombia's Visa M Profesional Independiente is a self-sponsored Migrant-type residence visa for foreign nationals who wish to practice a profession or skilled activity independently, without employer sponsorship. Established under Article 76 of Resolución 5477 of 2022, it is the only work-authorized M-visa category in Colombia that does not require employer or institutional sponsorship. The visa covers both regulated professions requiring a Colombian professional license and non-regulated activities where the applicant demonstrates expertise and experience.
The convalidación process with the Ministerio de Educación Nacional can take several months and must be completed before the visa application. Not all foreign degrees are automatically recognized — the Ministry evaluates equivalency with Colombian educational standards. For regulated professions, obtaining the professional card or license from the relevant professional council is an additional step and may require passing examinations.
The visa is granted for up to 3 years, though first-time applicants may receive a shorter initial period. It is renewable before expiration provided the applicant continues to meet all requirements. Absence from Colombia exceeding 180 consecutive days results in automatic cancellation of the visa. Short trips abroad do not interrupt accumulation of time toward permanent residency.
The principal holder may sponsor beneficiary visas for economically dependent family members: spouse or permanent partner, children under 25 who are economically dependent, and children with a physical or mental disability of any age. Each beneficiary applies separately, and beneficiary visas are tied to the principal's visa validity. Beneficiary time does not count independently toward the Visa R.
Foreign nationals present in Colombia for 183 or more days within any 365-day period become tax residents, subject to progressive income tax rates up to 39% on worldwide income. Non-residents are taxed at a flat 35% on Colombian-source income only. Independent professionals must register with DIAN, obtain a RUT, file annual income tax returns, and make social security contributions (health, pension, and professional risk insurance) as self-employed workers.
The work permit is exclusively for independent practice of the profession stated in the application. The holder may not work for a Colombian employer under an employment contract, and changing professions requires a new visa application.
The application is submitted online through the Cancillería's visa portal. After uploading documents and completing the form, the applicant pays a non-refundable study fee of USD 55. The Ministry reviews the application within 30 calendar days (often faster in practice). If approved, the issuance fee of USD 270 must be paid, and the e-visa is delivered by email. Approval is discretionary — payment of the study fee does not guarantee it.
After holding the Visa M continuously for 5 years (multiple M-visa categories can be combined), the holder may apply for a Visa R (Residente). The Visa R is valid for 5 years and can lead to Colombian citizenship through naturalization.
