Digital Nomad Visa

Moldova's Digital Nomad Visa is a temporary residence permit introduced under Law No. 144 of 19 June 2025 and in force since 20 September 2025, allowing foreign nationals who work remotely for employers or companies registered outside Moldova to live in the country for up to two years. The program is administered by the General Inspectorate for Migration under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and targets remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs in fields such as IT, design, marketing, consulting, and online education.

• Valid national passport
• Proof of remote work: employment contract with a company registered outside Moldova, or documentation of ownership in a foreign-registered entity
• Proof of income for the preceding 6 months meeting the minimum threshold: at least 3 times Moldova's average forecasted monthly salary per month (expressed in law as 18 average salaries over the 6 months before applying), approximately EUR 2,610 / 52,200 MDL per month for 2026
• Valid health insurance covering the entire duration of stay
• Proof of accommodation in Moldova (rental contract, property deed, or accommodation agreement)
• Clean criminal record certificate, translated and apostilled

The visa is granted for up to 2 years and can be renewed by submitting a fresh application with updated documentation. Applicants must continue to meet all eligibility requirements, including the income threshold, at the time of renewal.

• Holders may only work remotely for entities outside Moldova
• Employment with Moldovan companies or generating income from Moldovan sources is prohibited
• Must maintain valid health insurance and registered accommodation throughout the stay

Digital nomads spending fewer than 183 days per year in Moldova are generally not considered tax residents and foreign-source income is not taxed. Those spending 183 or more days may be classified as tax residents and subject to Moldova's flat 12% personal income tax rate on worldwide income. Holders must pay mandatory health insurance premiums to access Moldova's compulsory medical insurance system.

Processing time: applications for granting or extending the right of provisional stay are reviewed within 30 days

Applicants must apply in person, with a completed and signed application, at the General Inspectorate for Migration's One-stop-shop for the Documentation of Foreigners in Chișinău (Ștefan cel Mare Street 124), or at a regional directorate in Bălți (Dostoevsky Street 12) or Comrat (Comsomolului Street 22). Upon approval, applicants must appear in person to provide biometric data and collect the residence permit card.

State fees are set under the Law on State Fees No. 213 of 31 July 2023 and typically cover examination of the residence application and issuance of the permit card; amounts vary by processing timeframe (standard or expedited) and are updated periodically. Additional costs include document translation, legalisation/apostille, and mandatory health insurance. Confirm current fees directly with the General Inspectorate for Migration.

Dependants (spouse and children) may be sponsored under the family reunification provisions of Article 38 of Law No. 200/2010. The applicant must demonstrate sufficient means of subsistence covering family members as well, and family members' permits may not exceed the validity of the principal applicant's permit.
