The Neo Nomad Visa (category B12-1) is a multiple-entry tourist visa that allows foreign remote workers to reside in Kazakhstan for up to one year while continuing to work for employers or clients located outside the country. Introduced in November 2024, the program targets remote workers, freelancers, and digital entrepreneurs who earn at least USD 3,000 per month from foreign sources. The visa does not permit employment in Kazakhstan, and holders who maintain non-resident tax status are exempt from local tax obligations on their foreign income. Family members can accompany the visa holder.

Requirements
  • Must work remotely and earn income exclusively from foreign sources
  • Minimum monthly income of USD 3,000, demonstrated by 6 months of bank statements
  • Tax return from country of citizenship
  • Criminal record certificate from country of citizenship or permanent residence
  • Valid medical insurance covering the entire territory of Kazakhstan for the full visa validity period
  • Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity and at least 2 blank pages
  • Citizens of 48 exempt countries can apply directly; citizens of other countries require an invitation letter from a licensed Kazakh travel company
  • No specific educational or professional qualifications required
Required Documents
  • Bank statements for the past 6 months confirming stable monthly income exceeding USD 3,000
  • Tax return from country of citizenship
  • Criminal record certificate (from country of citizenship or permanent residence)
  • Medical insurance covering the visa validity period and all of Kazakhstan
  • Valid passport (6+ months validity, 2+ blank pages)
  • Invitation letter from a licensed Kazakh travel company (waived for citizens of 48 exempt countries)
Duration & Renewal

The visa is valid for up to 1 year with multiple-entry privileges, allowing holders to exit and re-enter Kazakhstan freely during the validity period. It can be extended for an additional 1 year by applying to the territorial migration police within Kazakhstan, provided the original conditions remain met (stable income, valid medical insurance, no migration law violations). Extension processing takes up to 5 working days. The maximum total stay is 2 years.

Family Members

Spouse and dependants of the visa holder may be issued visas for the same duration as the principal applicant. No separate income requirement applies for family members. However, dependants are not permitted to work in Kazakhstan.

Tax Implications

Income from foreign sources is not taxed in Kazakhstan for non-residents. However, individuals who spend more than 183 days in a calendar year in Kazakhstan may be considered tax residents and become subject to a flat 10% personal income tax on worldwide income. Remote workers should carefully track their days in the country to manage tax residency status.

Application Process
  1. Gather required documents: bank statements (6 months), tax return, criminal record certificate, medical insurance, and passport
  2. If not a citizen of one of the 48 exempt countries, obtain an invitation letter from a licensed Kazakh travel company
  3. Submit the application in person at a Kazakh embassy or consulate abroad
  4. Processing takes up to 5 working days
  5. The consular fee is USD 90

For extensions, submit a petition to the territorial migration police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs within Kazakhstan.

Entry Requirements

Upon entering Kazakhstan, the host party (hotel, landlord, or individual host) must notify migration services of the arrival within 3 working days. This notification is required upon each entry, when changing regions, or when relocating within the country. Mandatory fingerprinting registration applies for all visa applicants since January 2024. Kazakhstan has also rolled out QazETA, a new electronic travel authorization platform (launched January 2026), which becomes mandatory for eligible travellers from 25 August 2026 — applicants should check whether it applies to their nationality and route.

Employment Restrictions

The Neo Nomad Visa does not permit any employment in Kazakhstan. Holders may only work remotely for foreign employers or clients. All income must derive from sources outside Kazakhstan. This restriction also applies to accompanying family members.
