Thailand's Non-Immigrant Visa O-X (Long Stay 10 Years) is an extended retirement visa enabling foreign nationals aged 50 and over from 14 designated countries to reside in Thailand for up to 10 years. Approved by Cabinet Resolution on 22 November 2016 and effective since 11 August 2017, it requires substantially higher financial means than the standard O-A retirement visa -- a minimum of THB 3,000,000 in Thai bank deposits or THB 1,800,000 combined with THB 1,200,000 in annual income. The visa is multiple entry with 5-year validity, extendable for another 5 years. Employment is strictly prohibited, though volunteer work is permitted.
3 sets required (1 original, 2 copies):
The initial visa is valid for 5 years with multiple entries. It is extendable for another 5 years at the Immigration Bureau before the initial period expires. Financial requirements must continue to be met: THB 3,000,000 maintained in full for the first year, then at least THB 1,500,000. Funds can only be spent within Thailand and cannot be withdrawn during the first year. Valid health insurance from an OIC-approved Thai insurer must be maintained throughout. Holders must report in person annually for qualification verification.
Health insurance from a Thai insurer approved by the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) is mandatory. Minimum coverage is THB 40,000 outpatient and THB 400,000 inpatient per policy year. Since October 2021, COVID-19 coverage of at least THB 3,000,000 per policy year is additionally required. Insurance must be verified through the TGIA longstay portal. Enforcement has become stricter in 2025-2026, with some offices requiring presentation of original Thai insurance policy documents.
Spouses of any age may apply with a valid marriage certificate and all documents required of the main applicant. Children under 20 may apply with a birth or adoption certificate and a reduced set of documents (application form, passport, photographs, health insurance, and financial evidence). Dependants' visas are linked to the main applicant's visa period.
Standard Thai tax rules apply. Residents are taxed on income remitted into Thailand in the same calendar year it was earned. No specific tax exemption is attached to the O-X visa. Retirees not remitting income in the year earned generally have no Thai tax liability.
Applications are submitted at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in the applicant's country of nationality. Some missions accept applications via the Thai e-Visa portal. Processing typically takes 15-30 business days. Upon approval, the applicant receives a multiple-entry visa sticker valid for 5 years. The visa fee is THB 10,000 (approximately USD 400, non-refundable). As of May 2025, all arrivals must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online.
The O-X visa is multiple entry, allowing unlimited entries and exits during the 5-year validity without needing a separate re-entry permit. Each entry permits a stay of up to the full remaining visa validity. Financial maintenance requirements must still be met upon return.
Address reporting to the Immigration Bureau is required every 90 days via Form TM.47 (in person, by mail, or online). Failure to report on time incurs a THB 2,000 fine. O-X holders must also report annually in person for verification of qualifications and documents.
